What is Chandra Rashi?
Chandra Rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born, measured against the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac, using the Lahiri ayanamsa). In Vedic tradition this is what “your Rashi” means: it is the sign written in a family kundli, and the sign Rashi stones are traditionally matched to.
Why does birth time matter for my Rashi?
The Moon moves through a whole Rashi in about two and a quarter days, so on many days it changes sign, and its Nakshatra changes about once a day. With your birth time the calculator gives one exact answer. Without it, we check the whole day: if the Moon stayed in one Rashi you get that Rashi, and if it moved we show both, with the time of the change, so you can choose.
Why is my Moon sign different from my Sun sign?
Western horoscopes use your Sun sign, which follows your birth month in the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the Moon’s position in the sidereal zodiac, and the two zodiacs sit about 24° apart today. The Sun and Moon are usually in different signs too, so your Vedic Rashi often differs from the sign in a newspaper horoscope. They are two different systems, not a mistake.
