What each part of the day means.
A Panchang (“five limbs”) traditionally reads tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Here is the part of it we show, and how each is worked out.
सूर्योदय
Sunrise and the Vedic day
The Panchang day begins at sunrise, not midnight — so the weekday (vara) and the day's tithi are read at sunrise. Times are for the upper edge of the Sun, as printed Panchangs give them.
तिथि · पक्ष
Tithi and paksha
A tithi is one of thirty lunar days, each 12° of the Moon's journey away from the Sun. Shukla Paksha is the waxing fortnight up to Purnima; Krishna Paksha is the waning fortnight up to Amavasya. The day takes the tithi prevailing at sunrise, shown with the time it ends.
नक्षत्र
Nakshatra
The 27 nakshatras divide the Moon's path among the fixed stars into spans of 13°20′. The Moon passes through roughly one a day; we show the nakshatra at sunrise and when the Moon moves on.
होरा
Hora
The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 horas, and the night into 12 more. Each is ruled in turn by one of the seven planets, starting with the lord of the weekday — Guruvar's first hora is Jupiter's.
अभिजीत मुहूर्त
Abhijit Muhurat
The 8th of the day's 15 muhurtas, centred on local midday. It is traditionally chosen for new beginnings, and traditionally not observed on Wednesdays.

Sunrise and sunset use the upper edge of the Sun with atmospheric refraction; tithi comes from the angle between the Sun and Moon; nakshatra from the Moon's sidereal position (Lahiri ayanamsa). All times are Indian Standard Time; in our checks they match established printed Panchangs to within about a minute.
