What is japa?

Japa (जप) is the practice of repeating a mantra, traditionally counted on a mala of 108 beads. Each bead marks one repetition. The larger guru (meru) bead marks the start and end of a round — traditionally it is not crossed; at the end of a round the mala is turned and counting begins again.

Why 108 beads?

108 is held sacred across Hindu, Jain and Buddhist traditions. Two explanations often given: 12 Rashis × 9 Grahas, and 27 nakshatras × 4 padas. This counter lights a quarter of the ring every 27 beads.

When is it traditionally done?

Traditionally in the morning, after bathing, seated facing east. Many people chant this mantra on Wednesday (बुधवार), the day associated with Mercury — and, traditionally, before first wearing their Emerald (पन्ना). Practices vary by family and lineage; where you have a guru or family custom, follow that.
