A short, traditional introduction — customs vary from family to family and region to region.
The first day of Diwali
Dhanteras, also called Dhantrayodashi, falls on the thirteenth lunar day (trayodashi) of the waning moon, two days before Lakshmi Puja. “Dhan” means wealth and “teras” means thirteenth. Homes are cleaned and decorated, diyas are lit at the doorway in the evening, and families pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. Many also remember Lord Dhanvantari, who tradition says emerged from the churning of the ocean on this day.

Buying something of metal on Dhanteras — gold or silver jewellery, a coin, or a new vessel for the kitchen — is a long-held custom, traditionally seen as welcoming Lakshmi's blessings into the home.
